New York Giants News, 8/18: Justin Pugh “Excited” About Offensive Line

Let’s check today’s Giants headlines

Every time he steps in front of the media New York Giants left guard Justin Pugh hears some variation of questions that really carry only one meaning — “Hey, Justin, your offensive line hasn’t been very good, how are you going to fix it?”

It has to irritate Pugh, who has been answering some form of the “why isn’t the offensive line good enough?” question for five years now. Thursday, he was asked — not quite in so many words — how the line changes the “you’re not good enough” narrative.

Pugh said that after Friday’s preseason opener he believes “The offensive line is headed in the right direction.”

“I’m excited about the direction that we’re headed in. Just watching the game film, we’re doing some good things. It has to transition to the games, though,” Pugh said.

The Giants did surrender seven sacks against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but how many of those were the fault of the line and how many were caused by other factors is something everyone will have a different viewpoint on.

“It’s tough. If you’re going to look at the sacks, you’re going to blame the offensive line … If we had zero, but QB Eli Manning got hit a bunch of times, you’ll be like, ‘Oh you didn’t give up any sacks, great job!’ But if the quarterback still gets hit, we’re not doing our job. That can be a misleading statistic to look at,” Pugh said. “You have to get in there and look at the film to see how things went down and know who’s responsible for what to really be able to get a good understanding of it.”

Practice Update

The Giants practice Friday at 11:20 a.m. ET. Offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo are scheduled to be available to the media after practice.
