Giants’ Unofficial Depth Chart: Updated With Roster Changes

NFL: New York Giants-Training Camp William Hauser-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants’ roster has changed just a bit since the team released its first unofficial depth chart of the 2017 preseason over the weekend. So, let’s take updated look at it.

Defense

You have to feel for Mykkele Thompson. Whether the Giants should have drafted him or not in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, injuries have prevented Thompson from ever getting a chance to show if he actually had NFL-caliber ability. An Achilles injury wiped out his rookie season, a knee injury ended his 2016 season before the end of one game, and now a quad injury has knocked him off the roster. The signing of Jimmy Herman is likely to give the Giants practice depth with Keenan Robinson (concussion) and Mark Herzlich (stinger) sidelined.

One of the hard truths in the NFL if you are an undrafted free agent is that if you can’t get on the practice field every day, NFL teams have no time — or roster spots — to waste on you. They need every available body on the 90-man roster to practice the way they want to, and if you can’t get on the field you get replaced. Offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker, dealing with a foot injury, found that out. He’s out and Colin Brooks is in, mostly so that D.J. Fluker and Adam Gettis don’t have to pull double duty during practice.
