New York Giants News, 7/29: Good First Step For Darian Thompson

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Friday’s first training camp practice for the New York Giants was only a glorified walk-thru, but it was still a big day for second-year safety Darian Thompson. The second-year safety was back on the field, and working with the first team, after missing the final 14 games of 2016 with a foot injury.

Thompson, a third-round pick in 2016, admitted that getting back to football has “been something on my mind.”

“I felt good, just getting back out there on the field with my teammates and playing football again,” Thompson said. “It was a long off-season, even the break between mini-camp and OTAs and training camp seemed like forever. So, it just feels good to get back in the groove again.”

Andrew Adams was the primary fill-in for Thompson last season and proved to be a good player. Thompson is a ball-hawking free safety who intercepted a Mountain West Conference record 19 passes in four seasons at Boise State. The Giants have been unable to hide their excitement about the possibility of pairing Thompson with Landon Collins.

“I think they can be dynamic I really do,” safeties coach Dave Merritt said during the spring.

If Thompson is indeed healthy the Giants might get the opportunity to find out if Merritt is right.

“I know how old I am. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being 36. I’m proud of it. Hey, I feel good. I can still make all the throws. I can still run around when I need to. So, it is what it is. But, I don’t see myself slowing down at all and I feel like I still got great football ahead of me.”
