Stansly Maponga is a player the New York Giants obviously like. They have kept the 26-year-old defensive end around since signing him off the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad late in the 2015 season.
Does he have a future with the Giants at a position crowded with talent? Let’s take a closer look at Maponga as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.
2016 Season In Review
Maponga spent the entire season on the Giants’ 10-man practice squad. He had seven tackles, two sacks and four quarterback hits during the preseason. Maponga played in two games for the Giants in 2015 without denting the stat sheet.
2017 Season Outlook
A fifth-round pick by the Falcons in 2013, Maponga is a bit like the defensive line version of Adam Gettis for the Giants. He keeps hanging around and maybe he’s a guy who could be serviceable in a pinch, but he doesn’t seem like a player the Giants really want to rely on.
The Giants have a number of players standing in Maponga’s way. Stars Jason Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon are, of course, entrenched. Romeo Okwara, Kerry Wynn and Owamagbe Odighizuwa (if he returns) are holdovers from a year ago. The Giants signed Devin Taylor as a free agent and drafted Avery Moss in the fifth round. Undrafted free agent Evan Schwan flashed during the spring.
With all of those players standing in his way Maponga could end up on the outside looking in.
