NFL free agency rumors: Giants still in play for Martellus Bennett — report

Bennett was Giants tight end in 2012

The New York Giants started free agency with a bang by signing veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall earlier Wednesday, and they may not be finished yet. According to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, Big Blue is looking to land another big name in tight end Martellus Bennett.

Bennett caught 55 passes for 626 yards and five touchdowns as a Giant back in 2012. He starred for the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots last season after back surgery landed Rob Gronkowski on injured reserve.

The question becomes how the Giants — with somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 million in cap space remaining — would sign Bennett and also address their offensive line needs. Spotrac estimates Bennett’s value at $6 million annually. The Giants were already strapped financially when they franchised Jason Pierre-Paul; bringing Bennett back into the fold would end any chance of landing a top free agent tackle.

The Giants may be hoping Wisconsin offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk or Utah’s Garret Bolles are still available when they make the 23rd selection of the NFL Draft next month.
