Mark Herzlich is the veteran backup linebacker for the New York Giants who simply will not go away. Herzlich, a six-year veteran who does most of his work on special teams, will return to the Giants for a seventh season the team announced Monday.
That is another move on yet another busy day in East Rutherford, N.J. Earlier, the Giants had announced the signings of quarterback Geno Smith and cornerback Valentino Blake.
Herzlich, an undrafted free agent from Boston College, has been with the Giants since 2011. He has never started more than eight games in a season at linebacker and did not start any in 2016.
He contributes mostly on special teams for the Giants. In 2016, he played 87.6 percent of the team’s special teams snaps, more than anyone else on the roster. NFL stats, though, show that Herzlich did not register a single tackle in 397 special teams snaps. He played only 14 defensive snaps in 2016.
