The mystery of the quiet Johnathan Hankins free agent market cracked open just a bit Wednesday. It’s about the money. Of course.
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Miami Dolphins have interest in Hankins, but not at his asking price. Salguero said Hankins “wants a multi-year contract and wants to make $8M a year, at minimum.”
Salguero also writes that “the Hankins camp is holding firm on the idea he deserves and is going to get a multi-year deal.”
Last week I wrote that there were a handful of teams expressing interest in Hankins. I was told that one of the teams on that list walked away from negotiations with Hankins when it learned his asking price was four years, $40 million with roughly $20 million guaranteed.
Maybe Hankins and his reps are looking at the four-year, $28 million 29-year-old Nick Fairley got to remain with the New Orleans Saints. After Bennie Logan accepted a one-year, $8 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, though, it seems less and less likely that Hankins is going to find the rich, long-term pay day he is apparently still hoping for.
Latavius Murray joins Minnesota Vikings
Another veteran running back is off the free agent board as Latavius Murray has joined the Minnesota Vikings. Eddie Lacy recently signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
Murray, formerly with the Oakland Raiders, might have been a fit with the Giants as a complement to Paul Perkins. There is no indication, though, that the Giants are exploring the free agent running back market. Which means don’t hold your breath for an Adrian Peterson signing.
