The San Francisco 49ers added former Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew to their front office Thursday, according to Pro Football Talk. He will serve as a senior personnel executive for the team.
New 49ers General Manager John Lynch made that announcement Thursday as the team formally introduced Lynch and new head coach Kyle Shanahan. Lynch and Mayhew were teammates with the Buccaneers in the mid-1990s.
Mayhew was the director of football operations and special projects for the New York Giants in 2016 after being fired by the Lions the previous season.
Before breaking into the NFL, Mayhew served as director of football administration for the now-defunct Xtreme Football League (XFL), a joint-venture between WWE chairman Vince McMahon and NBC.
"He was instrumental in developing policies for the start-up professional football league. He was significantly involved in developing league procedures for player transactions and the draft. Mayhew also planned the league's training camps and supervised team officials in their planning of practices as well as other team activities."
