Alshon Jeffery won’t get franchise tag from Bears — report

Alshon Jeffery, who could be the top wide receiver on the free agent market next month, reportedly will not receive the franchise tag from the Chicago Bears. That means the 27-year-old is likely to reach the open market.

The New York Giants do have a readily apparent need for a big-bodied receiver to complement Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Jeffery, who has 304 receptions in five seasons with Chicago, certainly fits that description.

It would, though, be surprising to see the Giants make a serious run at Jeffery. Spotrac’s Market Value Tool puts Jefferey’s expected worth at $61 million over five year, $12.2 million annually.

That figures to be too rich for the Giants, who have defensive linemen Jason Pierre-Paul and Johnathan Hankins heading to free agency and need to prioritize trying to find veteran help on the offensive line.

Still, this means an intriguing player is almost certainly headed to the market.
