I hate to say that I told you so, but I told you so. When we looked at potential landing spots for former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, the Carolina Panthers seemed like an obvious fit. On Monday, Cruz reportedly visited with the Panthers.
Why does Cruz to the Panthers make sense? First, because Carolina GM Dave Gettleman was still a member of the Giants’ personnel department when Cruz broke in with the Giants back in 2010. Second, because the Panthers really need wide receivers for Cam Newton to throw to.
Carolina’s leading receiver in 2016 was tight end Greg Olson with 80 catches. Kelvin Benjamin led the team’s wide receivers with 63 receptions. Veteran Ted Ginn had 54 catches, and he can be a free agent. No other receiver had more than 27 catches.
Cruz had not signed as of Monday afternoon, and reportedly had interest from at least one other team.
Stay tuned. We will let you know if more develops.
