The New York Giants offense that takes the field against the Washington Redskins will be all but unrecognizable from what it was projected to be back in July and August.
We already knew that rookie tight end Evan Engram and sophomore receiver Sterling Shepard would be inactive this week. It was also strongly suspected on Saturday that they would be joined by third year offensive tackle Ereck Flowers.
Officially, Flowers is inactive with a groin injury. However, there have been numerous reports that the Giants grew frustrated with both he and now former right tackle Bobby Hart after Hart “nudged” Flowers toward giving up on the season after week 16, and the two refused to practice this week. Hart was waived on Saturday and it was strongly suspected that Flowers wouldn’t play — which is now confirmed.
Though much criticized, Flowers has been a stalwart for the Giants at left tackle. Despite often playing injured — including playing through a pair of high ankle sprains his rookie year — he has missed just one game in his first three seasons (prior to this week)
The move leaves the Giants with rookies Chad Wheeler (rookie) and Adam Bisnowaty starting at left and right tackle respectively.
At the skill positions, Shane Vereen, Roger Lewis Jr. and Wayne Gallman are the Giants’ leading receivers.
On the defensive side of the ball, rookie defensive end Avery Moss is once again inactive, though sophomore DE Romeo Okwara will be active after being activated off the injured reserve before week 16.
