Dave Gettleman hired as New York Giants general manager

The search is over, and the Giants stay in the family

The New York Giants announced Thursday that they have hired Dave Gettleman as general manager.

The Giants said in their announcement that they will officially introduce Gettleman during at 11:15 a.m. ET news conference on Friday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

“Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a General Manager and a proven track record,” president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch said in a prepared statement. “Dave’s experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here. Dave is going to bring his own approach to our organization in how we draft and acquire players through free agency.”

Per the Giants, Gettleman has been a part of seven Super Bowl teams, including three winners. He was with Buffalo in 1990 and 1991; Denver in 1997; the Giants in 2000, 2007 and 2011; and the Panthers in 2015. The Broncos and the 2007 and 2011 Giants won the championship. Gettleman has been associated with 16 playoff teams in his NFL career.

Gettleman, 66, entered the NFL as a scouting intern for the Buffalo Bills in 186. He joined the Giants in 1998 and spent 13 of his 15 seasons with the organization as the team’s pro personnel director.

Gettleman spent four years (2013-16) as GM of the Carolina Panthers, where the team went 40-23-1 and made the 2015 Super Bowl. He also ran free agency and the draft for this years’s Carolina team, which is 11-4.

Gettleman, out of the league since being fired by Carolina in the summer, was always the prohibitive favorite for the job. In-house candidates Marc Ross and Kevin Abrams were also interviewed. The only outside candidate interviewed was ESPN analyst and former NFL executive Louis Riddick.

Gettleman was a candidate for the job back in 2007 when Ernie Accorsi stepped down. He lost out to Jerry Reese, who was fired earlier this month. The Giants on Sunday will finish a season that has already seen them lose more games than during any other year in franchise history.
