Giants vs. 49ers: Jimmy Garoppolo not expected to play, as of now

Is that good news or bad news for the Giants?

The New York Giants might catch a break Sunday against the 0-9 San Francisco 49ers. Kinda. Sorta. Maybe. Depending on your point of view. Meaning, whether or not you would like to see the Giants lose to obtain a higher pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

It doesn’t sound like the 49ers plan to play newly-acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo against the Giants. When San Francisco acquired Garaoppolo from the New England Patriots before last week’s trade deadline, the Week 10 game against the Giants seemed like a logical target for his debut.

As of now, the 49ers seem to have other plans. As of now, it sounds like Garoppolo will be the backup and rookie third-round pick C.J. Beathard will once again start for San Francisco.

"We feel Jimmy is about where [an outside quarterback] would be, especially them not being with us for the last few months," Shanahan said. "Also, you'd have to cut other players to do that, and we don't have that leeway right now just to cut a lot of other guys. Everybody is playing a role on our team right now with the injuries we have now. If you can't IR guys, you don't lose that spot, so we really don't have the room for that right now."

Beathard has played in five games with three starts, completing 50.9 percent of his passes. He has two TDs, four INTs and a passer rating of 62.7.

So, perhaps a break for the Giants. Maybe. If you actually want them to win the game.
