With his team at 2-9, New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo knows the “normal procedure” would be to play young, unproven players to see if they might be part of the team’s future. With the obvious exception of quarterback Davis Webb, though, the Giants have been doing that for weeks now.
“We’re doing that, really, already, with the way things have come out injury-wise,” McAdoo said on Friday. “We have a lot of young players playing out there and last night (Thursday vs. Washington) was an example, young players playing on a short week and they played like it. We need to get more out of the young players on our roster. We took a step backwards there.
“We need these guys to grow up. It’s part of coaching, it’s part of playing. We don’t have time to wait, it’s got to be now.”
Devon Kennard: Be part of the solution
When the Giants return to work they will have five games left — games that mean nothing in terms of the standings. Having played four preseason and 11 regular-season games, this will be the part of the season many young player shave never experienced. Linebacker Devon Kennard had a message for his teammates heading into the final stretch.
“If you’re a young player, if you’re a player in the league really, you have a lot to prove,” Kennard said. “You’re fighting to show what you can do as a player and what you bring to the table to prove that you’re a part of the solution, not the problem. So that would be my message to young players and older players alike.”
