Giants Injury Report: JPP — “Of Course I’m Playing”

Updated with full post-practice details

NFL: Detroit Lions at New York Giants Northjersey.com-USA TODAY Sports

Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder/knee) did not practice for a second straight day on Thursday. The New York Giants defensive end, though, expressed full confidence in the idea that he will play Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Of course I’m playing Sunday. There’s no question,” Pierre-Paul told reporters on Thursday.

Pierre-Paul added that he has a sprained shoulder that “has been battling with me a long time ago.”

Other Injuries

OIivier Vernon (ankle) stretched, then quickly went inside. He didn’t sound nearly as certain as Pierre-Paul that he would be able to play.

“Just a competitor. I don’t want to miss a game and not be out there for my teammates and everything like that, but main thing is getting healthy so I can be out there longevity wise and help contribute,” Vernon said.

On offense, Weston Richburg (concussion) was not seen at practice and running back Paul Perkins (ribs) was riding the stationary bike.

Odell Beckham Jr. left practice early.

“It looked like he was cramping, but I’ll have to go in and check out and see what the final word is,” said coach Ben McAdoo.

Want good news? It looked like cornerback Janoris Jenkins (ankle) and running back Orleans Darkwa (back) were working.

Next Man Up

The Giants will have a major issue, of course, if neither Vernon nor Pierre-Paul is able to play. Kerry Wynn and Romeo Okwara are the backups, along with rookie Avery Moss. Cap Capi is also an edge player. Devon Kennard also plays defensive line at times in passing situations.

After his impressive debut last week, rookie running back Wayne Gallman was probably in line for extended work vs. the Chargers. Perkins’ injury likely adds to that possibility.

With Richburg appearing to still be in the concussion protocol, Brett Jones is the likely starter at center. The Giants elevated Jon Halapio from the practice squad. Mr Versatile, Justin Pugh, also said this week that he has been learning the center spot.
