NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport added some depth to the story by explaining that Coughlin initially interviewed to be the Jaguars’ next head coach. However, Jacksonville’s ownership is reportedly planning to hire Doug Marrone for that job. Rapaport added that Coughlin was never a serious candidate for the head coaching job, which caused him to “reverse course a bit” and decide to take an executive job in the Jags’ front office.

While the official power structure has yet to be released, insiders speculate that GM David Caldwell will continue to pick players with input from Coughlin. However, the former head coach could get more power if picks don’t begin to pan out.
Coughlin was also reportedly a candidate for the Buffalo Bills’ head coaching vacancy.
