The New York Giants, down to starting undrafted free agent Andrew Adams in just his second NFL game this Monday against the Minnesota Vikings, will reportedly work out former Pro Bowl safety Donte Whitner on Sunday.
The Giants have lost Mykkele Thompson to a season-ending knee injury. Darian Thompson (foot) will miss a second straight game Monday, and Nat Berhe (concussion) almost certainly won’t play.
A 10-year veteran, the 30-year-old Whitner spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He started 30 games for Cleveland the past two seasons.
With only two healthy safeties on the roster, the Giants passed this week on the opportunity to re-sign Cooper Taylor, Bennett Jackson or Justin Currie, all of whom were with the team in training camp.
Available veteran safeties other than Whitner include Antrel Rolle, William Moore, Rahim Moore, Louis Delmas, Ryan Mundy, Jaiquawn Jarrett and others. See a full list at Spotrac.
[Update 11:30 a.m. 10/1] Add a couple more names to the list of safeties the Giants will work out on Sunday.
One more safety (at least) in the Sunday workout for #Giants: Will Allen, formerly of #Steelers. So, Gary, Whitner, Johnson & Allen.
