Saturday won’t be an easy day for the New York Giants and head coach Ben McAdoo. Like the NFL’s 31 other teams, the Giants have to trim their roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players by 4 p.m. ET.
McAdoo specifically mentioned linebacker, running back and wide receiver among spots where it would be difficult to determine who to keep and who to cut. On Thursday, McAdoo said there would be "maybe a couple of surprises" among the final cuts.
Pressed for details about roster decisions, McAdoo was loathe to mention players by name.
"I'm not sure I want to let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. I want to be smart on what I say about players fighting for jobs," McAdoo said.
In addition to the positions McAdoo mentioned, the Giants have difficult decisions to make on the offensive line and in the secondary.
Cuts around the league began dribbling in on Friday. Check the SB Nation cuts tracker for all of the cuts that have been made thus far. Among the cuts, the Tennessee Titans released former Giants tight end Jerome Cunningham.
Here is an important distinction when it comes to players who get cut. Players with less than four years of experience are placed on the waiver wire, where they can be claimed by other NFL teams until noon on Sunday. Vested veterans, those with four or more years of experience, are simply released and become free agents without being subject to waivers.
Teams can begin forming 10-man practice squads at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
