Report — Ex-Giants coach Tom Coughlin hired by NFL

TC will work under direction of Troy Vincent

NFL: New York Giants-Press Conference Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

Former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has a new gig as part of the NFL’s operations department, per a report from ESPN’s Jim Trotter.

Per Pro Football Talk, “The football operations department works on officiating, rules, and communicating with coaches and players about the game on the field. The department is headed up by Troy Vincent.”

Thus, Coughlin gets to stay in the league and in New York.

While Coughlin’s exact role is unknown, this seems like a great move for both him and the NFL. It follows in the footsteps of former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre being hired by Major League Baseball to work in the Commissioner’s office.

Will the 69-year-old Coughlin ever coach again? Perhaps, if the right situation comes along in the next year or two. In the meantime, the league has done a good thing by hiring a good man with a lot of ideas and energy.
