In the interest of providing offseason reading/discussion material, the folks at Pro Football Focus have been meandering their way through a variety of position group rankings. Below, you will find PFF’s rankings for the New York Giants, along with some of my thoughts on each group.

Receivers (16th)

Projected starters: WR Odell Beckham Jr., WR Sterling Shepard, WR Victor Cruz, TE Larry Donnell

Key depth: WR Geremy Davis, WR Dwayne Harris, TE Matt LaCosse, TE Jerell Adams

I find it hard to believe that with Odell Beckham Jr. as the top dog, there are 15 receiving corps better than the Giants. Then again, think back to last year’s Beckham-less game against Minnesota.

Of course, this depth chart is way off the mark. At wide receiver it fails to mention Dwayne Harris. At tight end, where is Will Tye? Here at BBV we are projecting Tye to start and Donnell to be fortunate to make the roster.

QB situations (20th)

Starter: Eli Manning

Backup: Ryan Nassib

PFF has never been kind to Manning. Between that and the fact that there is nothing to go on in judging Nassib. this ranking isn’t a surprise. It’s probably too low, but it isn’t a surprise.

Offensive lines (20th)

Projected starters: LT Ereck Flowers, LG Justin Pugh, C Weston Richburg, RG John Jerry, RT Marshall Newhouse

Roster depth: Bobby Hart, Adam Gettis, Brett Jones

Eh, whatever. There still remains a possibility that the Giants will add a starting tackle to the mix. As for backups, no one really knows who they will be.

Running backs (22nd)

Starter: Rashad Jennings

Backups: Andre Williams, Paul Perkins, Bobby Rainey

Apparently Shane Vereen is not a running back. And Orleans Darkwa has no shot at making the team. Geez!

Defensive front 7 (12)

Projected starters: DT Damon Harrison, DT Johnathan Hankins; DE Jason Pierre-Paul, DE Olivier Vernon; LB J.T. Thomas, MLB Jasper Brinkley, LB Devon Kennard

Other names to know: DT Jay Bromley; DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE Kerry Wynn; LB Keenan Robinson, LB Kelvin Sheppard, LB Jonathan Casillas, LB Mark Herzlich, LB B.J. Goodson

Lots of optimism about the Giants’ front four. This ranking certainly can’t be based on the linebackers.

Secondaries (19)

Projected starters: CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB Janoris Jenkins, SCB Eli Apple, S Landon Collins, S Nat Berhe

Other names to know: S Darian Thompson, CB Trevin Wade, S Cooper Taylor

Don’t put any stock in the prediction that Berhe will start over Darian Thompson. That is still to be determined.
