What should we make of Wednesday morning's news that the New York Giants were one of three teams that put in a waiver claim on quarterback Zach Mettenberger when we was waived earlier this week by the Tennessee Titans.
Obviously, the Giants didn't win the claim. Mettenberger, a sixth-round pick by the Titans in 2014, was awarded to the San Diego Chargers. The Giants' interest, though, has to tell us something. But, what? Let's examine some possibilities.
The Giants are seriously entertaining keeping three quarterbacks
The Giants have rarely kept three quarterbacks in recent years, but they appear to be setting the table for keeping a third quarterback in 2016 with new head coach Ben McAdoo. They signed undrafted free agent quarterback Josh Woodrum, giving him a $20K guarantee, and he was thought to have an opportunity to stick around. The Giants, though, apparently didn't like what they saw in rookie minicamp and replaced Woodrum with journeyman B.J. Daniels. Now, they have reportedly shown interest in Mettenberger.
My guess is the hunt for a third quarterback continues.
Preparing for life after Nassib?
Could the Giants be preparing for life without backup quarterback Ryan Nassib? A 2013 fourth-round draft pick, Nassib is in the final year of his rookie contract. It is entirely possible, and understandable, that Nassib might seek an opportunity to compete for a starting job elsewhere after this season. Kicking the tires on experienced backup quarterbacks now might be a pre-emptive strike in an effort to have a backup who is prepared and knows the offense if and when Nassib departs.
Might it also mean that the Giants, if they can find a suitable replacement, might be willing to dangle Nassib as trade bait? Perhaps to the San Francisco 49ers if right tackle Anthony Davis un-retires? Personally, I have my doubts about that but it certainly a possibility.
Woodrum and Mettenberger won't be Giants. Daniels probably won't make the 53-man roster, either. Pay attention to the backup quarterback market, though, because it certainly seems like the Giants are on the hunt for another one.
