Reports came out after last weekend's rookie minicamp that the New York Giants would sign Lafayette cornerback Matt Smalley. Then, however, Monday's series of roster moves came and went without Smalley being added to the roster. Tuesday, however, Smalley was officially signed. Per NJ Advance Media, linebacker Uani 'Unga was waived/injured to make room for Smalley on the 90-man roster.

Smalley, 5-foot-9, 184 pounds, was a four-time Patriot League first-team selection. He also has experience returning kickoffs.

Tony Pauline of Draft Insider says "Smalley is best in a zone system or backed off the line of scrimmage and offers possibilities as a dime back/return specialist on Sunday."

We had speculated earlier this week that the free-agent signings of linebackers Jasper Brinkley, Kelvin Sheppard and Keenan Robinson, along with the selection of B.J. Goodson in the draft, had made 'Unga expendable.

The Giants have now added a trio of undrafted cornerbacks, with Donte Deayon and Michael Hunter also on the roster.
