Jerry Reese never fails to excite New York Giants fans with a first round selection. While the reaction has been divisive, everyone can agree that they were surprised by the pick. Count Eli Apple as one of them.
"It was weird," Apple said during a brief interview with giants.com. "I've met with them at the combine -- it went well, talks and stuff, but I would have never imagined. But that's how it goes sometimes."
The draft pick was not on anyone's radar. Particularly because the Giants have no immediate need for an outside cornerback with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Janoris Jenkins penciled as the starters. The Giants could possibly use Apple in the slot as a rookie. However, Apple feels like this situation can only help him.
"It's a great feeling because you know you have great guys, great corners," Apple said. "You can learn from them for sure. I can just learn to be a great corner under those guys and definitely contribute in the future."
As the 10th overall pick, Apple now has some high expectations for him. Apple compares himself to some of the top corners in the league that he models himself after.
"Guys like Revis, Logan Ryan from the Patriots, Aqib Talib, but you know now I have a great opportunity to learn form Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Janoris Jenkins and definitely become a great corner like them," he said.
The Giants front office definitely believes he can be a great corner, too.
