The New York Giants need help at free safety, and it looks like three of the top targets -- George Iloka, Rodney McLeod, and Eric Weddle -- are out of the picture. Iloka is returning to the Cincinnati Bengals, McLeod is joining the Philadelphia Eagles and Weddle reportedly is not interested in the Giants. Added to that, there are reports that the Giants are not interested in Tashaun Gipson of the Cleveland Browns.
So, where does that leave the Giants in their search for a free safety to pair with Landon Collins?
Here are a handful of names to consider:
Reggie Nelson -- Iloka's running mate in Cincinnati, Nelson is 32 but played well for the Bengals last season.
David Bruton -- Played part-time for the Denver Broncos in 2015, and did well. Bruton is looking for a starting job, and the Giants might have one to offer.
Walter Thurmond -- PLayed two games for the Giants in 2014, then signed with the Eagles, who converted him from corner to free safety. Could Thurmond cash in on McLeod arriving in Philly by returning to New York?
Rashad Johnson -- A seven-year veteran the Arizona Cardinals safety is now 30. Has a reputation of being good in coverage, but not stellar against the run.
Tony Jefferson -- Another Cardinal, Jefferson is only 24. The catch is he is a restrict free agent. The Cardinals gave the former free agent an "original round" tender, but the Giants would not lose a draft pick by signing him.
