2016 NFL free agency: Alshon Jeffery to get franchise tag -- report

New, comments

Sorry, Jeffrey won't be a giants

The 2016 NFL free agency wide receiver market clarified a bit on Friday when news came out that the Chicago Bears are going to use the franchise tag to keep Alshon Jeffery from reaching the open market. Jeffery was widely considered the best wide receiver scheduled to become a free agent. SB Nation, in fact, said Jeffery was "easily the top receiver in the free agent class."

The New York Giants, of course, have a need for wide receiving options beyond Odell Beckham Jr. and Dwayne Harris. Victor Cruz has not played in nearly two years and his status for 2016 seems murky. Rueben Randle is headed for free agency, and the expectation seems to be that the Giants won't try to keep him.

We have already profiled several potential targets for the Giants once free agency begins on March 9. Among them:

Other players expected to be free agents include Travis Benjamin of the Cleveland Browns, Jermain Kearse of the Seattle Seahawks, Anquan Boldin of the San Francisco 49ers and Percy Harvin of the Buffalo Bills.
