Let's begin your Tuesday with a look at some recent headlines that might impact your New York Giants.
Free agency
Let's start with this. Whether the NFL intentionally withheld money from players or not, it appears that the 2016 salary cap is going up even more. According to current projections, that would put the cap north of $155 million. The 2015 cap was $143.28 million.
Safety Tashaun Gipson reportedly expects to move on from the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland.com reports that "Gipson hasn't had much contact with the Browns, and it appears they're prepared to let him walk." Here is our free agent profile on Gipson.
We haven't talked at all about potential free agent left tackles, but we should, at least, mention that Oakland Raiders left tackle Donald Penn apparently believes his time in Oakland is done. Penn will be 33 next season, which makes him an unlikely candidate for the Giants.
Another brand-new free agent almost certain not to be a Giant would be cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who was released on Monday by the New York Jets.
2016 NFL Draft
NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock believes Oregon defensive end DeForest Buckner "could be the best defensive player to come out of this draft." Here is Mayock's full quote:
"He can play up and down the defensive line of scrimmage. He's nasty, he's tough, he's powerful. He's got a little Reggie White hump move that's friggin' awesome. Eight to 10 years from now, I think he'll be one of the guys we'll be looking back at that will be in the conversation as the best defensive player to come out of this draft," Mayock said.
ESPN says that Mel Kiper believes there should be plenty of quality offensive linemen available in the second round of this year's draft.
Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott is a popular choice for the Giants at No. 10 in mock draft. NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks, though, does not believe Elliott is even the best running back in the draft class.
