The New York Giants today placed rookie safety Darian Thompson, who has not played since Week 2 after suffering a foot injury, on injured reserve. Thompson will undergo surgery, the team announced on Wednesday.
Taking Thompson’s place on the roster will be offensive lineman Adam Gettis. The 27-year-old Gettis entered the NFL in 2012. He played in one game for the Giants last season, and has been on the practice squad. Gettis, who can play guard and center, will offer the Giants insurance with Justin Pugh out for a few weeks due to a knee injury.
In the absence of Thompson and Nat Berhe, who missed four games with a concussion, undrafted rookie Andrew Adams has emerged at safety for the Giants.
Other roster moves
After seeing wide receiver Geremy Davis sign with the San Diego Chargers and promoting Gettis to the 53-man roster, the Giants filled the practice squad vacancies by signing wide receivers Kevin Norwood and Da’Ron Brown to the 10-man squad.
Norwood had nine receptions for the Seattle Seahawks in 2014. He played one game for the Carolina Panthers in 2015. Brown was a seventh-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs last season, and has spent time on the practice squads of the Chiefs and New England Patriots.
Norwood and Brown both worked out for the Giants this week. Here is the complete list of players the Giants worked out.
LB Shaquille Riddick; LB Carlos Thompson; OT Michael Bowie; WR Da’Ron Brown; DB Sam Brown; TE Kyle Carter; TE Kivon Cartwright; LB Reshard Cliett; DB Jacob Huesman; LB Austin Jacques; WR Kevin Norwood; QB Sean Renfree; OG Cyril Richardson; De Jordan Williams; DB Blidi Wreh-Wilson.
