Corey Washington, a darling of the fan base after starring during the 2014 preseason, has reportedly been waived/injured by the New York Giants as they continue paring down the roster to reach the 53-play regular season limit. Teams must be at that number by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday. Washington did not play Thursday in the preseason finale vs. the New England Patriots due to a shoulder injury.

Washington tweeted "It's been real NY," and several reporters have confirmed his release. The "waived/injured" designation means that Washington may not be ex-Giant quite yet. Should he go unclaimed, Washington would land on the Giants' injured reserve list.

An undrafted free agent from Divison II Newberry College Washignton became a sensation with four touchdown catches during the 2014 preseason. He was rarely used during the regular season, however, and caught only five passes. He made little impact this preseason, however, with only three catches for 25 yards.

Washington, James Jones and Julian Talley have all been dropped from the roster today. That would indicate that if the Giants are going to keep an extra receiver as protection for Victor Cruz that it will be Preston Parker, who filled in admirably for Cruz a season ago.
