Giants vs. Jets preseason 2015: Victor Cruz, Weston Richburg among inactive players

The Giants will have three starters inactive against the Jets, but what players will be active?

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants have announced the players who will be inactive for tonight's preseason game against their cross-stadium rival, the New York Jets.

Among the the inactives are starters Victor Cruz, Weston Richburg, and Jon Beason. Beason isn't much of a surprise as he recovers from the sprained MCL he suffered in last week's game against the Jaguars. Richburg and Cruz being inactive are a bit more surprising, but understandable.

Though Cruz's calf injury is not related to his surgically repaired knee, the last thing the Giants want is for him to push himself too far, too fast, and re-injure the knee compensating for his sore calf. Likewise with Richburg, it was stated that he probably could play if there were a regular season game, but considering that it is still preseason, it makes more sense to hold him out. Rest is important in the treatment of tendinitis, and the extra rest and treatment rather than the rigors of a game could be the difference between going into the season healthy and having to manage an injury throughout the season.

The other notable inactive player is Jonathan Casillas. Casillas played well when on defense against the Jaguars, and he practiced this past week. But, the Giants' team doctors seem to be taking a more cautious route in dealing with Casillas' injured neck.

The Giants have a couple notable active players as well.

Safeties Landon Collins and Cooper Taylor are both listed as being expected to play against the Jets. Collins is still generally expected to be one of the Giants' starting safeties this season, while Taylor began the offseason as a starter before sliding down the depth chart. Can he reclaim some standing with a strong performance tonight?

Wide receiver Ruben Randle is expected to play as well. Randle has been dealing with knee tendinitis as well, but getting on the field is big for him. The starting offense needs to have as many weapons on the field as possible to work on their timing before the season starts.
