New York Giants Potential Free-Agent Target: C.J. Spiller, RB, Buffalo Bills

The fallout from the LeSean McCoy-Kiko Alonso trade bomb dropped Tuesday by the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills will include Buffalo running back C.J. Spiller looking for a new home once free agency opens on March 10.

Could the New York Giants be a landing spot for the displaced veteran running back?

We have talked about the fact that the Giants missed the speed and big-play pass-catching potential of David Wilson in 2014. Spiller, 28 next season, is a player who could provide those elements. He has a career average of 5.0 yards per carry, with 3,321 yards rushing on 668 career carries. He has also caught 158 passes, averaging 7.6 yards per catch.

There are a couple of issues with bringing Spiller to the Giants. One is that the market for his services is likely to be an active one. The Eagles, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals are among the teams that have been mentioned as possible suitors for Spiller.

The other problem is role. The Giants could a third change-of-pace back, but Spiller has been more than that throughout his career. Spiller has twice carries the ball more than 200 times in a season. The Giants supposed No. 1 back, Rashad Jennings, has never done that. He had a career-high 167 carries last season, with rookie Andre Williams actually leading the Giants in carries (217) and yardage (721).

Would Spiller co-exist in a rotation with Williams and Jennings? Or, would signing Spiller necessitate cutting Jennings, in the second year of a four-year, $10 million deal? Would the Giants even be willing to consider that?

Spiller is definitely an intriguing name, with an intriguing skill set. Perhaps, though, the Giants are better off using a mid-round draft pick on a running back -- the 2015 draft class is supposed to be flush with talented backs -- and letting that rookie compete with Orleans Darkwa and Michael Cox for a roster spot.
