Pick - Randy Gregory, DE, Nebraska

Explanation

I know everyone is talking about his failed drug tests, but how could I not go with the player that I have ranked #2 overall in terms of talent? And it doesn't hurt that the Saints need to get to the passer more often, and Gregory would be a perfect piece in Rob Ryan's defensive scheme. Putting Randy Gregory on the opposite side of Junior Galette, and possibly even behind Cameron Jordan, is too appealing to pass up, even with the aforementioned character concerns. Trae Waynes was my second pick here, since Browner seems like he's going to simply be a stopgap for the Saints, but Gregory was just too high on my board.

This is a definite risk/reward pick. If it pays off, the Saints get one of the, if not the, most talented pass rushers in the whole draft, and a legitimate steal. If it doesn't pay off and Gregory can't overcome his bad habits, this could set their already troubled defense back considerably. The Saints seem to be undergoing a philosophic shift this offseason, and upgrading a defense that has been terrible two of the last three years seems to be a big part of it.

The combination of talent and potential scheme fit makes this a great pick if it pans out for the Saints.
