New York Giants' co-owner John Mara addressed a wide variety of topics during an encounter with reporters at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. We have already talked about his take on the team's work in free agency and his thoughts on the upcoming draft. Now, let's touch on some of the other things Mara spoke about
Osi Umenyiora
Mara said the long-time Giants' defensive end, currently a free agent, "should retire as a Giant." What Mara did not say is that he would like to see the 33-year-old Umenyiora playing for the Giants next season. "Retire as" and "playing for" are two vastly different things. We know Umenyiora still wants to play, but Mara's sentimentality doesn't mean the Giants should let him.
Eli Manning
Will the Giants' quarterback get a contract extension? Mara certainly made it seem that way, saying "obviously we'd like to get something done at some point."
Steve Spagnuolo
Mara told reporters that he let head coach Tom Coughlin choose the team's new defensive coordinator, but that when the choice was Steve Spagnuolo "I was very happy with it."
Update on George Selvie
The Giants are hosting free-agent defensive end George Selvie, but also appear to have competition for Selvie's services from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
