Our weekly NFL mock draft roundup this week brings us familiar names and poses a familiar debate for the New York Giants. It's mainly offensive lineman Brandon Scherff vs. the under-sized edge rusher of your choice.
Scherff, the often-discussed Iowa offensive tackle, is the choice of four of the 10 mock drafters we selected this week. Dan Kadar of SB Nation's Mocking The Draft has consistently beaten the drum for Scherff, calling him "the best offensive lineman in this year's draft."
The chance that the Giants would draft Scherff -- or whichever offensive lineman they feel is the best available -- seems to increase with each day that passes without the Giants signing a starting-caliber offensive lineman in free agency. In truth, there aren't too many of those left. Joe Barksdale, Rob Sims, Justin Blalock, maybe Mike Pollak. That's about it right now.
Then there are those edge rushers. Two analysts here have chosen Randy Gregory of Nebraska and one has taken Shane Ray of Missouri. As I have all along, I continue to think these are highly unlikely choices for a team that relies on a 4-3 base defense. If the Giants want an impact defensive end, Dante Fowler, 'Bud' Dupree or someone like Owamagbe Odighizuwa or Preston Smith on Day 2 seems like a more natural fit.
As for safety, would the Giants really take Landon Collins of Alabama at No. 9? Most draft analysts see that as too early for Collins.
