We usually run our weekly 2015 NFL mock draft roundup on Friday. Yours truly is traveling today, however, so to make sure you have enough New York Giants related content to keep you satisfied our roundup of mocks from around the Inter-Google appears on Thursday.
Mel Kiper of ESPN released version 2.0 of his mock draft on Wednesday, of course selecting Iowa offensive tackle Brandon Scherff for the Giants. We also examined the risers and fallers in Kiper's mock.
Our 10 mock drafts this week continue to show a preference for offensive linemen, with six selections at that position. Scherff is chosen twice, as is Miami offensive tackle Ereck Flowers. Andrus Peat of Stanford and La'el Collins of LSU are each chosen once.
The other four selections go to 'edge rushers.' Shane Ray of Missouri is selected three times, and Dante Fowler of Florida once.
While I may not be as devoted to draft analysis as some are, I have to say that the Ray to the Giants connection mystifies me. The Giants, even with a new defensive coordinator in Steve Spagnuolo, still at heart a 4-3 defensive end with his hand in the dirt team. I can't see them drafting one of these 240-245-pound 'edge' players -- like Ray and even Randy Gregory of Nebraska -- and asking them to play a traditional defensive end. Maybe if you ask him to play 4-3 WILL, but that doesn't seem like the right fit. Fowler is 260-plus, so that makes more sense. At least to me.
