New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin looked and sounded like a broken man following his team's listless 49-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.
"I didn't see this coming," Coughlin said. "Disappointed is not the word. It's just very difficult for me to explain it to be honest with you."
"We have one week to go ... there's some soul searching that has to be done on everybody's part. Players, coaches, me," Coughlin said.
Even without the suspended Odell Beckham Jr. Coughlin hoped the Giants, after scoring 31 and 35 points the past two weeks, would be OK offensively. They weren't.
"I don't know that in the second quarter we even had a first down," Coughlin said. "Too many times we put our defense in a terrible, terrible position."
Say what you want about Coughlin. He is a two-time Super Bowl winning coach who has always been a class act. It's said to watch him stand at a podium and look and sound utterly defeated.
