With a roster spot open since fullback/defensive tackle Nikita Whitlock was officially placed on IR with a knee injury Wednesday, the New York Giants have re-signed veteran safety Brandon Meriweather.
Meriweather started the first 11 games of the season for the Giants, then missed two games with a knee injury. He was released last week to make room for defensive tackle Barry Cofield.
The emergence of Cooper Taylor is part of what had made Meriweather expendable. Taylor, however, suffered a concussion on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. The reports that Whitlock would be placed on IR surfaced on Tuesday.
The loss of Whitlock leaves the Giants without a full back. Whitlock has also been a situational pass rusher and critical special teams player.
"I'll tell you, what he did for the last two weeks as a lead blocker was very good," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "So we miss that part of it. He did a nice job blocking the linebackers. But he was on all special teams. He was injured actually as a defensive lineman, so we lose that aspect of rotation as well.
"(We will) work around it the best we can. He was used as a special situation defensive line. He wouldn't have been in on first and second down."
Here is the Giants' complete injury list for Wednesday:
RB Orleans Darkwa (illness)
WR Dwayne Harris (shoulder)
LB Devon Kennard (foot)
DT Markus Kuhn (knee)
DE George Selvie (concussion)
S Cooper Taylor (concussion)
