The New York Giants need more talent on defense. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, or a general manager to figure that out. They aren't going to find it this season, though. They will have to try to make a stretch run to the playoffs with the less-than-ideal pieces they have.
In the upcoming offseason, though, you have to believe that no matter who the coach is the Giants will expend considerable effort trying to upgrade their defensive personnel. Free agency will be part of that. With that in mind, let's look a list from Pro Football Focus of the top 10 defensive players who could hit the open market.
A caveat. It's not time to go into deep analysis of who the right guys are and how they fit. At least it isn't for me. There are four games to play and many things that will happen before free agency, and those things will get most of my attention.
That said, I know many are always in a hurry to spin forward, so here's a brief opportunity to do that.
The 10 players on PFF's list, from 1-10:
Von Miller, OLB, Broncos; Josh Norman, CB, Panthers, Muhammad Wilkerson, DE, Jets; Eric Berry, S, Chiefs; Mike Daniels, DE, Packers; Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, Giants; Tamba Hali, OLB, Chiefs; Eric Weddle, S, Chargers; Adam Jones, CB, Bengals; Bruce Irvin, LB, Seahawks.
Set aside, for now, discussing JPP. We will do plenty of that Pretty much every player on this list could help the Giants. Realistically, though, many of these players will never reach free agency. For me, the name that really interests me is Irvin, a play-making linebacker who could still do even more in the pass rush department.
How about you, Giants fans? Is there a single -- realistic -- name on this list you would like to see with the Giants next season?
