The New York Giants handled business on Sunday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a 32-18 victory. While the game was much closer than the score indicates, the Giants were in the lead for the majority of the game. Not too much to complain about, especially for Tom Coughlin.
Tom Coughlin on finishing games
The 2015 Giants never fail to make the fourth quarter interesting as three of the Giants four losses came wit a collapsing fashion. The wins the team does have aren't that cofmortable either. However, the Giants were able to finish on Sunday against the Buccaneers much to the pleasure of Coughlin.
"We always preach about finishing," Coughlin said. "Tonight we did. I give them credit, Lovie done's a good job. They've battled, the young quarterback played well. In the long run, we kind of hung in there and got ourselves a much needed win."
The defense against the New Orleans Saints can take most of blame as the most recent example of failing to close out games. Coughlin however was confident that they would improve.
"I felt good about the defense coming in," Coughlin said. "I thought they would bounce back. They did a nice job, holding basically field goals, we did have the one touchdown at the second half. Disappointing in the turnovers, but we got some and put ourselves in pretty good position as well."
However, Coughlin also noted that the team didn't play as well as they could have.
"At times, we didn't play as well as we're capable of playing and then we kind of boosted it up at the end to make sure we're going to win."
Eli Manning: "We did what we had to do to win"
The offense has been up and down throughout most of the game as they were able to march down the field but having to settle for field goals. But the offense was able to score enough to win the game and in the end that's what matters most for Eli Manning.
"Offensively, I thought we did some good things in the first half, second half it was tough," Manning said. "It was tough to get into a rhythm. They did a good job of changing some things up and playing us pretty well. But there was definitely some opportunities but we did what we had to do to win."
Manning further elaborated on the second half offensive struggles.
"Second half, defense got us a turnover right off the get go. Great field position, missed a couple throws there that could have been touchdowns or first downs, set us up for a field goal. But I thought after that, we converted on some third downs, we had some things, we just weren't getting many big plays."
Rashad Jennings on the OL
The OL has seen a slow rebuild over the years but Jennings wasn't shy in complimenting this unit for their play on Sunday.
"We moved the ball down the field, but we still got to close how we want to with the ball in our hands. But hats off to the offensive line, opened up holes and the backs throughout the whole game just kind of pounded it."
