Coughlin: Jason Pierre-Paul will play Sunday "if he's ready"

Coach indicates JPP will see increased reps the next two days.

Jason Pierre-Paul will practice Wednesday and Thursday for the New York Giants, then a decision will be made about the defensive end's readiness to play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin indicated on Wednesday. Coughlin said Pierre-Paul will get "a good amount of reps" both days.

Coughlin said that accelerating Pierre-Paul has nothing to do with Sunday's defensive debacle against the New Orleans Saints.

"It has to do with him and whether he's ready or not," Coughlin said. "If he's ready we'll play him. If he's not ready then we'll take more time.

"He's in outstanding physical condition ... we're feeling good about accelerating him along. There's nothing unusual about it when a guy that's in the position that he's in is in the condition that he's in and prepares himself to play. That's what he's done."

Trade Deadline

The Giants, of course, made no moves at Tuesday's NFL Trade Deadline. Coughlin indicated that they did try.

"There were phone calls made, there always are. They obviously didn't work out, but I don't think anybody's satisfied just sitting there," Coughlin said. "This is our team. We are going to do the very best we can with our team. Right now we're currently in first place, so let's stay there."

On the progress of Tampa Bay QB Jameis Winston

"He's taking good care of the ball right now," Coughlin said. "He's gotten a grasp of what they would like to do. He does have a strong arm."

Will Beatty decision next week

Coughlin indicated that offensive lineman Will Beatty, returning from a torn pectoral muscle, will practice but not play this week. The Giants will make a decision next week on whether or not to activate the veteran tackle.

"He's going to work this week and then the decision is forthcoming," Coughlin said.

Other injury updates

Cornerback Prince Amukamara (pectoral) will do some individual and some scout team work. Middle linebacker Jon Beason (ankle/knee), TE Larry Donnell (neck), WR Victor Cruz (calf) and WR Rueben Randle (hamstring) won't practice. Coughlin said "none that I know of" when asked if there was any indication Cruz could return to practice soon. Coughlin that Donnell (neck) is "week-to-week, I'm sure" and then said "day-to-day, week-to-week, I don't know." Either way, that does not sound encouraging for Sunday.
