Tom Coughlin: Playoff race "a lot of fun compared to where we've been"

Giants' coach previews game against Washington

The past two seasons, the New York Giants have been playing out the string of what became losing campaigns. This season, the Giants are leading the NFC East and have an opportunity to end a three-year playoff drought.

"It's a lot of fun compared to where we've been the last couple of years," head coach Tom Coughlin said on Wednesday as he met the media to preview Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.

The Giants begin a six-game season that will determine whether they make the playoffs or not with a game Sunday in Landover, Md. Here are some other takeaways from Coughlin's remarks.

On the Redskins

"They have a very talented offensive team with many weapons," Coughlin said.

Coughlin added that he thinks Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins is "much more confident" than when the Giants played the Redskins earlier in the season, a game the Giants won, 32-21.

"The rhythm with which he goes about his business, particularly in the play-action pass game is outstanding."

The Giants have defeated the Redskins five straight times, but Coughlin reminded that past performance is no guarantee of success this Sunday.

"You have to earn it every time you play," Coughlin said. "Past records mean nothing."

On Landon Collins

Coughlin doesn't appear worried about the confident of the rookie safety after his costly dropped interception on the final drive of the loss to the New England Patriots. He does appear worried about what he sees as Collins' tendency to sneak toward the line of scrimmage when he needs to be in center field.

"He's a pretty tough, resilient kid," Coughlin said. "All I'm interested in after the fact is how do we correct it? I think he understands that, or I hope he does.

"One of the things Landon likes to do is kind of creep up. He'll have to learn to stay deep."

On Hakeem Nicks

Can Hakeem Nicks, signed last week, help vs. the Redskins?

"We're gonna have to find that out," Coughlin said.

Coughlin said that Nicks would do a lot of scout team work this week.
