The New York Giants have added a defensive tackle to their 53-man roster to replace the injured Johnathan Hankins. Just not the one most people expected. With Hankins (torn pectoral) being placed on Injured Reserve, the Giants promoted defensive tackle Montori Hughes from their practice squad to fill the vacancy.

Defensive tackle Louis Nix III, waived on Saturday by the Giants, has also been re-signed. He takes Hughes' spot on the practice squad. Linebacker Nico Johnson was also added to the practice squad.

Hughes, 6-foot-4, 350 pounds, was a fifth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2013. He played in four games that season and 12 for the Colts -- with one start -- last season. He also played in three postseason games for Indianapolis last season.

Nix was originally awarded to the Giants off waivers from the Houston Texans on Sept. 6.

Johnson has 18 games of NFL experience with the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. He was a fourth-round draft choice by the Chiefs in 2013.
