Coughlin: Will Beatty returning to practice for New York Giants

Beatty has been on PUP with a torn pectoral muscle.

Offensive tackle Will Beatty, on PUP with a torn pectoral muscle suffered lifting weights during offeason conditioning, will begin practicing with the New York Giants on Wednesday. That will start the clock on the 21-day window the Giants will have to add Beatty to the 53-man roster, IR him for the season, or release him.

Coughlin said that Beatty will begin "very slowly" with individual drills, and then escalate from there/

Other takeaways from Coughlin's Wednesday press conference:

On Dallas QB Matt Cassel

This will be Cassel's first game with the Cowboys after an in-season trade from the Buffalo Bills. Coughlin said the Giants went all the way back to Cassel's 2008 New England Patriots tape to study what to expect.

"We've done all our homework," Coughlin said.

On the Giants' offensive line

"The other night (vs. the Philadelphia Eagles) wasn't our best effort, obviously," Coughlin said. "We've gotta pick ourselves up and get bck on track and recognize the strength of their defensive front, which is a good one."

Coughlin pointed out something that was obvious Monday night -- that the Giants need to do a better job holding the edges in pass protection.

"Hopefully we'll get some of this straightened out," Coughlin said. "We've gotta do a better jov of not getting beat on the edge or not getting pushed back into the quarterback's face. Even with the three-step drop stuff you've gotta have time to get the ball out."

Injury Notes

Coughlin said linebacker Devon Kennard and defensive end Robert Ayers would both practice, as would linebacker Jonathan Casillas (calf). Middle linebacker Uani 'Unga is on the injury report with a neck injury, but Coughlin said "I don't think they made much of that." Coughlin wasn't sure if Odell Beckham and Rueben Randle, both dealing with hamstring issues, would practice. He said both "were sore."
