2015 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Gerod Holliman, S, Louisville

Who needs tackling when you intercept 14 balls in one season?

Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Gerod Holliman is a divisive prospect. Some really, really like him. Some really, really are repulsed by him. It's easy to see why. He seems like a better athlete than football player, but you don't make 14 interceptions in one season by not having some special qualities. He's going to need to go the right place in order to succeed. Are the Giants one of those places?

Update: Read our NFL Draft scouting reports 2015 for the top prospects.

Pros

- Seems athletic and is reportedly intelligent.

- Clearly has a nose for the ball and is a natural hands catcher.

- Instinctive in coverage and usually takes good angles.

- He's got plenty of range.

Cons

- Words cannot describe how bad his tackling ability is. Biggest weakness and it's huge.

- Seriously, I think it's both that he doesn't have any technique, but also doesn't really try.

- Thin frame that is concerning for possible injury.

Does He Fit With The Giants?

No. The Giants like their safeties to be able to hit, and the 6-foot, 201-pound Holliman won't do that. I don't recall the Baltimore Ravens (Spags was their secondary coach) playing a lot of Cover 1 with a single high safety and that's where I think Holliman could succeed the most. He's clearly a free safety with range, but that range doesn't matter if you don't take good angles to the ball carrier.

Final Thoughts

I recently had Holliman as my 22nd-ranked player, but after watching more of him I'm going to demote him a bit in the next big board update. The tackling issues are a bit too strong to handle. I still think he's got first-round capability, but he's a specialized player and he needs to go to the right team that can maximize his strengths and hide his weaknesses.
