Giants free agents 2015: Keep or cut Daniel Fells?

Tight end Daniel Fells provided an uplifting story in a dreary season for the New York Giants. After being out of football in 2013, thinking that perhaps five years in the NFL were all he was going to get, Fells took full advantage of an opportunity given to him by the tight end-needy Giants.

Originally signed to a reserve/futures contract, Fells made the team and became a dependable part of the Giants' offense. He played 530 snaps, caught 16 passes (including a career-high four touchdowns) and was a dependable run-blocker, earning a +3.9 score in that category from Pro Football.

The Giants have Larry Donnell as their primary pass-catching tight end. Adrien Robinson also seemed to finally show some development toward the end of the season. Did Fells, 31, do enough to be brought back in 2015?

Valentine's View: Keep Fells. He isn't a great pass-catcher in terms of being a guy who can win one-on-one match-ups. He will, however, catch the ball when you throw it to him. He also showed himself to be a pretty good blocker, something Donnell clearly is not at this point in his career. Maybe Robinson pushes his was past Fells on the depth chart in 2015. Maybe the Giants draft someone or bring in a younger tight end as free agent. With the work Fells did in 2014, however, he deserves an opportunity to go to training camp with the Giants and compete for a roster spot.
