Giants free agents 2015: Keep or cut John Jerry?

In need of veteran help on the offensive line, the New York Giants gave John Jerry a chance despite his involvement in the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal as a member of the Miami Dolphins.

Jerry, by all accounts, was a solid citizen for the Giants. There were no issues, no complaints, no problems between Jerry and his teammates. In that regard, the 27-year-old five-year veteran was better than advertised.

On the field, Jerry showed the Giants tht his reputation as a solid pass blocker but a poor run blocker was exactly on target.

The Giants likely didn't envision Jerry as a 16-game starter when they signed him. The retirement of Chris Snee, a season mostly lost to injury by Geoff Schwartz, and the mysterious fall down the depth chart of Brandon Mosley resulted in Jerry starting all 16 games at right guard for the Giants. Jerry finished the season with a -16.3 Pro Football Focus grade, his negative numbers earned almost entirely in run blocking. He was -16.4 in that department, worst on the team.

That's been the story for Jerry as a player throughout his career. Always a better pass blocker than run blocker, sometimes being exceptional at one while being awful at the other. Mystifying for a massive man who is listed at 6-foot-5, 349 pounds.

Is Jerry part of the long-term solution for a Giants' offensive line that improved in 2014, but is clearly still in need of some help?

Valentine's View: Cut Jerry. The Giants were among the worst running teams in the league, and the blocking data tells you exactly why. The triumvirate of Jerry, center J.D. Walton (-11.4) and left guard Weston Richburg (-8.7) didn't get the job done in the middle. Add tight end Larry Donnell and his awful -13.1 run blocking score and you see why Giants' running backs rarely had anyplace to run.

If the Giants are serious about running the football better next season, Jerry cannot be penciled in as a starting guard. Perhaps they could bring him back as depth, he does have some ability and experience playing tackle. That would be the only scenario where, in my view, it would make sense to bring him back.
