Analyzing the Giants picks

1) Devante Parker, WR, Louisville

I know much of the reaction will be why I didn't take an offensive lineman. All three of the top OL were on the board. For me, La'el Collins, Devante Parker, and Andrus Peat were on the same tier. I came quite close to picking Andrus Peat given how the board fell, but instead opted for Parker because I felt he could be a difference maker right away.

Wide receiver is a need for me in the sense that I think that the team will benefit a great deal from another elite wideout. Victor Cruz is no sure thing. Rueben Randle is inconsistent and is a free agent next year.

If Cruz is out to start the year, Randle probably gets the start in the slot and Parker is pro-ready enough to start opposite Odell Beckham. He doesn't have the suddenness that Odell has, but what he does have is size (6-foot-3, 210 pounds), he's got a great understanding of the route tree and can present himself as a big, easy to hit target down the field, and an absolutely insane catch radius. What does that do? Forget about spreading targets around, the impact of Parker goes beyond that. Do you think teams can afford to stack 8 in the box anymore against the run if you have Parker and Beckham on the field at the same time? Hell no! Both safeties will be occupied by both threats and that in itself opens up the run game more than an offensive lineman would. An elite receiver prospect like Parker allows Eli to throw quickly to another target outside of Odell if he's under pressure. The reason why the 2011 Giants succeeded despite having the worst OL in the game is because Eli trusted both Nicks and Cruz to make contested catches and to run the right routes so he could throw with confidence. The Giants had trouble going four wide becaues they didn't have that many people they could trust. That would've forced more nickel and dime coverage and less blitzing. Parker makes that possible and that's why he's my pick for the Giants at 9.

2) Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke

Of course, to reach elite levels, you need to give your QB some time. Tomlinson has not allowed a single sack in the past two years at Duke. He provides power and good footwork to bring some nasty to the OL at right guard. This means, yes, Geoff Schwartz stays at left guard, but I never thought he was going to leave, anyway. Tomlinson has some technique flaws, but not enough to keep him on the bench day 1. He'd get the start, and the offensive line will look like Beatty-Schwartz-Richburg-Tomlinson-Pugh with John Jerry, Brandon Mosley, Marshall Newhouse, and Brett Jones as key reserves.

Did I mention that Tomlinson is a bad ass run blocker? Oh yeah. Andre Williams will be pretty darn happy.

3) Derron Smith, FS, Fresno State

This pick was a value pick as much as it was a desperate need pick. Smith is tremendous in coverage, whether it be as a Cover-1 protector or even lining up and playing man-to-man in the slot. He is a ballhawk with instincts and soft hands.

He's not the best tackler in the world, nor will he do much in run defense, but you don't draft him for that. You draft him to make plays on the ball and not let anybody win with the big play. That's something that has been sorely lacking with this team since Will Hill smoked his way out of the organiziation. Funnily enough, my pro comparison for Smith is Rahim Moore, a player I strongly advocated for in free agency this year.

4) Za'darius Smith, DE Kentucky

If you haven't read this about Bud Dupree and Za'darius Smith, by noted film study guru Matt Waldman, I suggest you read it: Futures: Bud Dupree and Za'darius Smith

Smith is a football player. Period. He's a base 4-3 power LDE that is a legitimate run stopper at the next level. He is polished, athletic enough, and most importantly, he is smart. He's only played football forfive years and he's got a pass rush polish and understands the game. A coach's dream. He can slot into the rotation and spell Robert Ayers on the right side.

5) Tyeler Davison, DT, Fresno St.

We haven't talked much about Davison here at BBV. He's a player that is certain to be on their radar, however. He's got size at 6-foot-2, 315 pounds with vine-like 34-inch arms. He's got production, with eight sacks last season playing nose for Fresno State. Lance Zierlein has stated that he reportedly is a very high character individual, earning the nickname "Rhino" from his teammates.

That checks all the boxes, and the Giants have a need at the three technique spot. He's got an above average burst off the snap and he's got power for days. He could fall in the draft because he needs some technique work, played in the Mountain West Conference, and because he can only play in a four-man front.

6) Jake Ryan, ILB, Michigan

Here's your late-round beezer! Many think Ryan will be gone way before this, but I don't have him rated as highly as other places. He lacks great read and react ability as well as the ability to disengage from blocking. However, he's supposedly exceptionally smart, lives in the film room, and is a very good blitzer. He tore his ACL in 2013 and took some time to get up to speed in 2014 but he could be a downright steal for the Giants

7) Sam Carter, SS, TCU

Was the leader of the defense for Gary Patterson. Lined up all of his teammates. Not overtly physical or athletic, but he's got the instincts. Some like him better than teammate Chris Hackett. He'll likely be a special teams player for us, but you need smart players there. Also, it can't hurt to add more bodies at safety. He'll compete for a chance to be on the 53-man roster.

7) Andrew East, LS, Vanderbilt

DeOssie is a free agent after this year and he's likely asking for more than the league minimum. He wasn't doing well in 2014, so it might be time to move on. East is apparently the best long snapper in the country (I honestly have not personally watched him, sorry).
