A consensus has formed around Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff going to the New York Giants with the ninth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. That much is obvious when we look at this week's mock draft roundup, where seven of our 12 mock drafts have Scherff as the selection for the Giants.
So, we're going 'Scherff-ing' again. Or, any of the other fantastically predictable puns 'Rap' used earlier this week in discussing Peter King's selection of Scherff for the Giants.
But, let's hold on a second here. Let's take a U-Turn and get away from Scherff City for a while. Let's not talk about Scherff at all. Let's talk about the 'what-if' scenarios in the event that GM Jerry Reese and the Giants want to go in a different direction.

-- What if the Giants decide that if they are going to take an offensive lineman at No. 9 it has to be a guy who is seen as a potential long-term left tackle? That puts Andrus Peat of Stanford, Ereck Flowers of Miami, T.J. Clemmings of Pittsburgh and La'el Collins of LSU all in play.
-- What if the Giants decide to ignore the draft analysts who says No. 9 is too early to select Alabama safety Landon Collins? The Giants have a need at safety, and Collins is clearly the best safety in the draft class. Does that make him value for the Giants at nine? Or, is a reach regardless?
-- What if Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper is still on the board? We know Reese has a wide receiver fetish. The smart play for the Giants would seem to be to address offensive line or add to a defense in need of playmakers. Will JR be able to resist the wide receiver temptation?
-- What if Reese and the Giants have honed in on the idea that they need an impact pass rusher? There are a bunch of them available. Dante Fowler of Florida probably won't be on the board, but what if Bud Dupree of Kentucky is?
-- What if Reese and the Giants decide to do something absolutely no one sees coming? That's not like the Giants, but you never know. Going completely off the script and grabbing someone like Georgia running back Todd Gurley would accomplish that.
The possibilities are endless, and totally unpredictable. All Giants' draft roads appear to pass through Scherff City. That, however, doesn't mean they have to stop there.
