Missouri defensive end Shane Ray, a player some believe would be in consideration for the New York Giants with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, was cited for possession of marijuana on Monday morning. According to ESPN, Ray was pulled over for speeding shortly before 6 a.m. and a "personal amount" of marijuana was reportedly found in the car.
The Giants drafted all team captains a year ago. GM Jerry Reese said last week that character matters to the Giants, especially with their premium picks early in the draft.
"I think we are always mindful of a player's character and background. That always goes into the equation. It is not really anything new for us. Obviously, like all teams, we have taken some guys on the back end of the roster, more risk-reward kind of situations on the back end of the roster. We are very conscious and have been for a long time about backgrounds and character," Reese said.
There has also been concern recently about a foot injury Ray suffered. The injury is not expected to require surgery, but the combination of the two concerns would seem almost certain to push Ray out of consideration for the Giants at No. 9.
