What the heck is going on here? Just days after claiming him off waivers from the New York Giants, the New England Patriots have waived rookie defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles.
Could Quarles, a player the Giants hoped to pass thru waivers and re-sign to their practice squad, be headed back to the Giants? It isn't as simple as whether or not the Giants would like him to return.
First, Quarles has to pass thru waivers. If the Giants, or any other NFL team, were to claim the rookie from South Carolina he would have to be placed on the 53-man roster. The Giants have already shown they are not ready to do that with Quarles.
If he goes unclaimed Quarles becomes a free agent. He could then sign with any team as a member of a 53-man roster or practice squad.
Greg Knopping of SB Nation's Pats Pulpit expects the Patriots to try to get Quarles to their own practice squad.
"I know they like Quarles. They want him on the practice squad as well," Knopping wrote in an e-mail. "[Hs being waived] Might have something to do with Chris Jones and Sealver Siliga being closer to a return to action than anticipated."
Would you like to see Quarles back with the Giants?
