"First game. It's the first game," Coughlin said. "I'm encouraged, period. We had what the league gives you, practice-wise."
The Giants, of course, have the benefit of an extra preseason game because of being involved in the Hall of Fame Game. The coach sees that as a plus.
"The fifth game I look at in a very positive way. Hopefully we're going to get a lot out of it," Coughlin said.
How about Coughlin's first thoughts on the team's new offense?
"I thought eventually we got to where we ran the ball pretty well. That might not have been their ones in there, but still we did have some consistency of runs there," Coughlin said. "As we get a little bit better with our pass protection the ball will end up going down the field a little bit more."
How about the play of second-year quarterback Ryan Nassib, who went 7-of-12 for 139 yards and one touchdown?
"That's why we're playing him a lot. He's a very serious young man, talented kid that needs to play," Coughlin said. "Didn't get to play last year at all, so he needs some time. As he does he'll grow, he'll get better."
Coughlin holds a media conference call today at 4:30 p.m. ET, so we will have more from him following that.
